Crops Research Directorate is one of the five research directorates of Gambella Agricultural Research Institute (GARI) that aims to increase the productivity of crops through generation of improved agricultural technologies and practices.

Objectives
- Release improved crop varieties that are climate-resilient and superior to the best varieties under production in terms of yield, pest resistance, stress tolerance or quality parameters.
- Recommend optimum agronomic technologies and practices that increase crop productivity.
- Recommend safer and cheaper pest management technologies and practices.
- Periodical surveillance and status record of the changing pest dynamics in the face of changing climate.
- Train experts, Development Agents & farmers on the use of improved crop production technologies.
- Maintenance of breeder seed of improved varieties that are under production.
- Enhance capacity for research.

Crop Technologies Recommended by GARI
There are up to 32 crop technologies recommended by GARI, started from 1987 up to 2010 E.C in all the research centers. These technologies include the following commodities; four (4) improved maize varieties (Gambella Composite, Abobako, Gibe-1 and BH-540), two (2) improved Sorghum varieties (Gambella-1107 and Teshale), two (2) improved Finger Millet varieties (Tadese and Padet), seven (7) improved Rice varieties (Superica-1, Nerca-3 and Nerca-4), four (4) improved Soybean Varieties (Belesa and Awash-98), three (3) Haricot Bean varieties (Nasir and Awash Melka), two (2) improved Sesame varieties (Adi and Abasena), one (1) improved Sun Flower, two (2) improved Hot Pepper varieties (Melka Zola and Melka Awash), two (2) improved Sweet Potato varieties (Gura Low-low and Belela), two (2) improved tomato varieties and two (2) improved Cassava varieties.
